Change in Plans - May 2010 Newsletter

In Proverbs 16:9 says “A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” I have found this to be so true in regards to my plans to go to the States for a visit. In my last newsletter I shared that I was planning on going in February this year but I ended up not being able to go because I still didn’t have a visa for living here in Romania. If you don’t have a visa Romania requires that you have a ticket to fly back to the States from Romania. That would have meant buying not only a round-trip ticket but also an additional ticket back to the States. The cost to do that made the trip way too expensive. So instead of going in February I worked on getting a visa to live here in Romania.

Started Business
If you remember from my last newsletter I said that my best option for getting a visa was to start a business and that is what I ended up doing through a lawyer and Florin helping me. It is called Evangel Media and the motto is “Bringing the transforming power of the gospel to life”. About three weeks ago I received a five year visa which was the first one I have ever received for more than one year. I was so happy and praised God when I picked up my visa card! It is so nice that I won’t have to deal with this again for five years.

Coming in September
So now that I have my visa for Romania I plan on going to the States in either late August or early September and staying till late October. Lord willing that is! If you would like to meet up while I’m in the States let me know as I am going to work on my plans over the next few weeks. Right now my tentative plan is to fly to California from Romania then on to Montana then Idaho then maybe Washington and then back to California to fly back with a team that will be coming to do a week-end retreat for Calvary Chapel Bucharest and Brasov at the end of October. While I am in the States I will need some places to stay so if you would like to host me while I am there please let me know.

Financial Situation
The year started out really well as I received more support in January that I ever had before. But in February and March I received less than I ever had. Thankfully April was more in the normal range. Starting up the business and paying all the fees for the visa totaled about $1,500 which didn’t help the situation either.  Since I used up most of my savings last year things are really tight now, probably the tightest it has ever been for me except for when I first moved to Romania. In fact, it will be interesting to see if I will have enough to pay rent for my apartment later this month.

I also need money to buy tickets in order to fly around while I am in the States and it would be best to do it soon so the tickets will be at their cheapest price. In addition, there are things needed for my ministry in Romania that I would love to be able to buy while in the States.

So as you can see I have many needs. Please pray that God will provide for me. Please also pray for more monthly supporters for my regular ongoing living expenses as well as one-time gifts to be able to pay my rent this month and also to cover everything related to my trip to the States. If you have any questions or would just like to talk please contact me using one of the options below.

In part two of my newsletter I will share more about Evangel Media and what has been going on in the ministry. Until then.

God bless,

William

Delirious Concert in Bucuresti

On Saturday night there was a Delirious Concert here in Bucuresti. A group of us from our church went. Cost was about $10. They put on a great concert, really rocked out with worship and gospel oriented songs. Martin Smith is pretty much "the man" for the group. He put out a lot of energy and seemed to really enjoy himself on stage. I heard they are retiring the band soon. It was great to get a chance to see them live. The video is a collection of clips I took with my photo camera. Quality of video and audio is pretty poor but you can see some of the energy of the band and crowd. Enjoy.

Video Clips from Concert

Here are some video clips from our outreach concert on Friday, November 7, 2008 featuring the band "Decean" and the pantomime group "Impact Team". We had a porfessional guy video the concert for us so in a week or two we should have video of the whole two hours of the concert.

Trăirea Evangheliei / Living the Gospel

Trăirea Evangheliei / Living the Gospel from William Anderson on Vimeo.

This last session of the Gospel Workshop was held on October 12, 2008 during the church service of Calvary Chapel Bucuresti. In this session we looked at the importance of living out the gospel focusing on three things- living in the kingdom of God, living a life of repentance and our destiny to become Christ-like.

Aceasta ultima sesiune a Atelierului despre Evanghelie a fost tinuta pe 12 Octombrie 2008, in timpul serviciului bisericii Calvary Chapel Bucuresti. In aceasta sesiune am privit la importanta trairii Evangheliei concentrandu-ne la trei lucruri: trairea in Imparatia lui Dumnezeu, trairea unei vieti de pocainta si destinul nostru de a deveni asemenea lui Cristos.

Împărtăşirea mărturiei tale/Sharing Your Testimony

Împărtăşirea mărturiei tale / Sharing Your Testimony from William Anderson on Vimeo.

In the third session of the Gospel Workshop held in Bucuresti on October 11, 2008 we went over how to share your testimony with a focus on Jesus. We went over a 5 point outline with guidelines on what to avoid and what to do.

In a treia sesiune a Atelierului despre Evangheliei, tinut in Bucuresti pe 11 Octombrie 2008, am vorbit despre cum sa-ti impartasesti marturia avand ca centru pe Isus. Am parcurs o schita de 5 puncte despre lucrurile care trebuie sa le evitam si lucrurile care trebuie sa le urmarim.

Since we did not have time to go over how to live the gospel during the workshop we closed this session with some thoughts on living the gospel. On Sunday for church we went over the material for the "Living the Gospel" session.

Datorita faptului ca nu am avut timp sa parcurgem subiectul cum sa traim evanghelia in timpul atelierului, am incheiat sesiunea cu cateva ganduri despre evanghelie. Duminica, in timpul serviciului bisericii am parcurs materialul sesiunii "Trairea Evangheliei".

Mesajul de bază al Evangheliei / Basic Gospel Message

This is the second of two sessions that dealt with understanding the gospel at the Gospel Basics Workshop on October 11th in Bucuresti. In this session we looked at what makes up the basic gospel message- we have a problem, there is a solution and how we get this solution for ourselves. In addition we looked at some of the key verses in the Bible in regards to the basic gospel message.

Bazele Evangheliei / Gospel Basics Introduction

Bazele Evangheliei / Gospel Basics Introduction from William Anderson on Vimeo.

This is the first of two sessions on understanding the gospel of the Gospel Basics Workshop held in Bucuresti, Romania on October 11, 2008, In this session we looked at the need to establish a good foundation, why the gospel is important, the way the word "gospel" was used in Jesus' day, descriptors of the gospel found in the Bible, the heart of the gospel, what is included in the whole gospel message and we finished the first session looking at the difference between religion and the gospel.

Echipare Pentru Slujire / Equipping to Serve

Echipare Pentru Slujire / Equipping to Serve from William Anderson on Vimeo.

Before we began the Gospel Basics Workshop on October 11th here in Bucuresti we went over our new program to equip people to serve the Lord explaining why we should serve.

First 3D Movie in Romania

Today Florin, his son David and I, along with Sorin, a friend of Florin's from Severin, who took the photo, went to see the very first 3D movie ever in Romania, Journey to the Center of the Earth. The cinema at the Plaza Mall here in Bucuresti is the only cinema in Romania with a 3D projector. We went at the cheapest possible time as the ticket prices vary according to the day of the week and time of day and if it is the first two weeks of showing. The price for a ticket for me was 23 RON which is about $9. With the price of movies nowadays I don't go often so it is a special treat when I go.

When I first came to Romania in late 1997 the cost of a ticket was less than a dollar in the coal mining town I lived in. The sound was terrible, there was no heat in the building so we had to dress warm and people smoked in the cinema. Times have changed! One nice thing in addition to the price back then was you could bring in your own drinks and snacks. Not sure what the policy is today but the cost of drinks, popcorn and snacks at the cinema is probably close to what it is in America. I was real thirsty when we got to the cinema today so I bought a half liter diet Coke for 6 RON, almost $2.50! First time I ever bought something at the cinema here and probably the last.

We really enjoyed the movie, it was a great to be able to experience the 3D technology. I don't think it ever flinched as much at a movie as I did this one. Even though you know it's not real it is hard not to react when something seems to be coming directly at you. The subtitles in Romanian really stood out as 3D which added to the sense of depth to the movie itself.

I look forward to seeing other movies in the future that take advantage of this 3D technology. I wonder what they could have done with a movie like the "Passion of the Christ" with this technology?

Please Pray for Our Outreach Concert Nov. 7th

We would really appreciate your prayers for an outreach concert we are planning for Friday, November 7th here in Bucuresti. This is not a concert for Christians but for the lost, especially the youth. We have a Romanian Christian band lined up called "Decean" who we think are a good fit for what we want to do.

Here are some specific things you can pray for this outreach:
  • For wisdom if we should have any other bands (maybe even a band from the States)
  • For finding a place to hold the concert in a good location where lots of university students live if possible
  • For wisdom in how to best promote and publicize the concert
  • For redoing our church's website and developing the gospel website more so we can publicize them at the concert
  • For wisdom on how best to do follow-up- maybe plan a special meeting a day or two later
  • For the finances to pay all the costs involved in doing the concert
Here is a link to a music video version of the song in the video above and here is a link to an English version of the song if you want to know what they are singing.

At the American Soldiers Memorial on July 4th

Freedom is Not Cheap

Here I am at the Memorial to the 378 American soldiers who died in Romania during World War II. The memorial is located in Cismigiu Park which is the oldest park in Bucharest. On the left side the wording is in English and on the right it is in Romanian. It expresses the deep appreciation of the Romanians for the ultimate sacrifice these Americans made fighting for the freedom of Romania. Until I came across this memorial I never knew that any American soldiers had been in Romania during World War II.
